"Apprentice" means a former slave, freed at abolition but required to serve a term of indenture to the former slave master before gaining full freedom. EW]

As he himself being a slave could not hold slaves in his own right, he was likely also to lose the Compensation, through the faithlessness of the friend in whose name they had been registered"...
